Week 9 (winter session)

Letter Dd

Themes:  desert habitat, dinosaurs, dogs

Season:  winter, spring

Sight word review

Dear Parents:
On Tuesday we will learn about the desert habitat (following the ocean and jungle learned the past two weeks).  A great sensory activity this week would be to put some sand/dirt in a box/bin and add rocks, cactus and desert animals.  Then Wednesday when we discuss dinosaurs, remove the desert elements and add in dinosaurs, dinosaur eggs, etc.

On Thursday we will talk about dogs.  Following last week’s Pet Day and this Thursday’s lesson about dogs, one of the suggested activities for your child is to take care of their dog for a day.  They will need your guidance and help to be able to complete all that’s required to care for their pet, as they are far too young on their own.

Reminders:

  • No school next week; enjoy Spring Break!

  • Please mark your calendar to join us in class May 6 from 9-9:30 (PST) for our virtual Mother’s Day.

  • WE WISH A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MIMI ON MARCH 20!!!

In addition to all the above:

  • Remind your child to read their sight word books out loud to you or another family member daily.  This week we will review the ones we’ve learned:  the, see, I, can, like, look, and.

  • Practice writing each sight words on a dry erase board, with sidewalk chalk, the back cover of the sight word book, etc.

  • Continue practicing math sentences up to 10 using one of the two math mats sent week 4 (Feb. 2-4) and week 8 (Mar. 2-4).

Tuesday – bring to class the booklet ‘Have You Seen That Habitat?’  (you’ll receive this in the mail) Please have your child cut it out and arrange it numerically.  It would be helpful to have the left side stapled so that the booklet doesn’t come apart when we read it during class.

Wednesday bring to class ‘Read Rainbow Fish’ (mailed) and a pencil.

Also this week we are learning our seventh sight word: ‘and’.  Keep all seven books together and ask your child to read at least two of them to you or another family member daily in order to reinforce the words.

On Thursday, we will have Pet Day!  Your child may bring her pet/pets to class and share. It promises to be an interesting and fun day!  We will share our pets near the beginning of class so that you may return your pet to its favorite place to hang out and so that we can continue class with the least amount of distraction.  Bring sight word book to class (My ‘And’ Book).

Later this week we will discover the rain forest/jungle habitat (followed the next two weeks by the ocean and desert habitats).  I’ve included activities for sampling jungle foods as well as a few fun recipes to try.  In order to prepare your child for this unit of study, I encourage you to find books in your home library to read which will introduce habitats.

In addition to all the above:

Sight word: ‘can’
Season: winter

Dear Parents:
This week we continue building our sight words to include letter ‘can’. Please assemble the book and have it ready for class on Wednesday 2/10/21; we will complete it together in class. I am making the new books larger than the first two so it’s easier for the children to work in and less complicated for you to assemble. Print the pages, cut them in half, then bind by stapling a couple stapes on the left side. I ask that your child to read their sight word books daily
to family members to reinforce the words.

In math, we are continuing with ten frames and math sentences up to six. The heart addition math mat sent in last week’s Mighty Muscle Builders will continue to be a fun visual way for your child to learn addition skills. Use conversation hearts, buttons, beads, or any other small objects for markers. Put the page into a plastic sleeve so that it may be re-used. Using a dry erase marker, create math problems for your child adding to six.

The work is designed for your child to be able to complete with minimal supervision from you, and is designed to strengthen their fine and gross motor skills, cognitive and problem-solving abilities, and increase their language and literacy skills. You will need to give instructions and explain new concepts such as this week’s conversation heart experiments, but please refrain from doing the work for your child. Practice makes progress (not perfect) and that’s exactly what we’re looking for!

WEEK 1

In addition to this week's muscle builders, you will find a sign for your child's 'First Day of Pre-K' photo.  Be sure and print it out and take that all-important first-day-of-school photo!

You will also find a letter of introduction from me about your child's Pre-K Workbook.  Please insert it into your child's binder as the first page.  We will add to the binder weekly.

Happy muscle-building!  Your mighty masterpiece is getting stronger every day!

Supplies for Week 1:

  • one small sheet of sturdy paper such as cardstock or construction paper

  • stapler

  • popsicle stick or tongue depressor

  • scissors

  • playdough (a recipe for homemade playdough is on the website)

  • basket of square and cube items such as a dice, a block, a paper or fun foam square shape

  • a 3-ring binder

  • worksheets:  writing letter Ss, name writing, drawing squares

Tuesday's Mighty Muscle Builders

1. Complete letter Ss worksheet (You will see that the download includes the entire workbook, but this week we will only be looking at the Ss worksheet)

Be sure child is seated comfortably in a well-lighted area.  Child may use a jumbo grip pencil or crayon for the worksheet, preferably no markers.  Resist the urge to do the work for your child.  Remember, Practice Makes Progress (NOT perfect).  Add worksheet to child's binder.

2.  Complete Name worksheet, page 2

Child will write his name one time on the first line only.  Parent may write the date next to it and then add it to child's binder.  As we progress through the school year, the child will be adding his name and by the end of the school year, you will see how his writing has improved.  Watch for correct pencil grasp.  At first, your child may use all upper case letters for his name.  Over time, encourage him to write it using first letter upper case and the rest lower case.

3.  Go outside and play soccer (ie. kick a ball towards a goal) with a parent, sibling or friend for 20 minutes.

4. At bedtime, child finds two books that start with letter Ss.  Read them together.

Wednesday's Mighty Muscle Builders

1.  Today in class we will learn about the season autumn/fall.  Continue discussing seasons with your child; they will need to find something that reminds them of fall and bring it to class to share tomorrow.

2.  Go on a square scavenger hunt with the MAGIC SQUARE FINDER (see instructions)

3.  Make 'S' objects with playdough.  Ideas:  snake, letter Ss, snail, snowman, square
